LNT supports and, whenever possible, practices the principles underlying fashion accountability and sustainability standards, such as the Fashion Revolution Manifesto, the Fair Trade Textile Standards, Fashion for Good, and Good On You App.

LNT creates fashion products that bring lasting beauty and pleasure into the world, via the skilled work of

Indigenous Artisans, who do dignified work at a living wage, and with a low environmental impact.

At the heart of LNT business is the mission to help perpetuate vanishing textile traditions by sustaining the artisans in their work.

My commitment to the Earth and to Fair Trade has been embodied in LNT since the day I started this business over two decades ago. And even long before that I strove to walk lightly on the Earth, in beauty, with a clear conscience.

I design and commission Clothing and Accessories, which I contract with Artisans I have worked alongside for decades to create.

Many times they turn locally produced Cotton or wool Thread into Hand-Woven Garments and Accessories & Blankets.

I also provide the creators with natural fibre fabrics that they Crochet or Embroider or otherwise embellish through thier traditional methods. Crochet for example was introduced to Latin America by the Spaniards.

LNT often upcycles with recycled Hand-Dyed Indigo and Vintage Embroidered and Hand-Woven bases previously used as garments to make other garments of our own designs, in this case every single item is completely different, the patter can be the same but the look of each garment is totally unique..

LNT focus on natural-fiber clothing was born of my desire to avoid the synthetics and plastics and harsh and dangerous chemicals that have come to mean fashion, for many, my desire to let my body breathe and luxuriate in the feel of textiles that breathe against my skin.

Care for the Environment:

The Earth is not a place for us to put our garbage – it is a wondrous environment we are blessed to live in, Which nourishes and sustains us, and which we must take tender care of.

LNT uses the least resources we can and embodies them in beautiful creations designed to last for lifetimes.

Here are some of the ways LNT takes care of the environment and minimizes its ecological footprint.

Materials used:

Most LNT fashion products are made from handwoven cottons, usually coloured with natural dyes.

Many products are created from Vintage or Upcycled Fabrics, I source. (The avoidance of synthetic fabrics is a pillar of our business, in fact its genesis)

See our About page, to learn about our beginnings and our journey.

Our materials are simple and among the least problematic in the Fashion Industry.

Cotton, of course, like any commercial crop, comes with an ecological footprint, but compared to most fibers –

and considering all its advantages, as well as the health of the Earth and the comfort of the people who wear

cotton clothing – it’s a clear win.

Sustainable production and consumption:

I cannot rest when I see waste in a process or see the Earth being damaged.

Fortunately, LNT’s business is all about creating stylish products in natural ways, mindfully, and so there’s a near-total absence of waste or damage, making a closed loop, circular economy a natural system for our enterprises.

We produce a small quantity of high-quality items, with the idea that each one will be purchased and loved – nothing will go to waste.

Instead of fast, disposible fashion, LNT focuses on slow, durable, timeless fashion. Our clothing is meant to last for decades, meant to educate the public about the numerous fast fashion pieces in the customers wardrobe. Meant to be cherished and worn again and again.

The customer keeps our Clothing forever and if not someone else cold buy it secondhand and keep it even longer.

Eventually it may naturally biodegrade and/or be turned into other useful products, like quilts, artwork, or upcycled clothing.

Energy and Water use, Greenhouse Gas Emissions:

LNT production uses little electricity – most of our products are handwoven on backstrap or foot pedal looms; others are

sewn on simple sewing machines, sometimes powered by a treadle or by hand.

Similarly, creation of Las Niñas Textiles products uses small amounts of water, primarily for cleaning the updycled fabrics used.

Shipping products worldwide is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions from the business. LNT is working to streamline its production, warehouse and shipping processes to maximize efficiency and minimize the distance its clothing must travel to find its way from the artisan to the purchaser.

Packaging:

LNT purchases are generally wrapped in coloured paper and then secured in waterproof shipping envelopes or up cycled boxes. Our branding items are minimal, nothing wasteful, just a manilla tag to tell you #whomadeyourclothes and a sourced Vintage Postcard to say thank you for your purchase x

Fair Trade:

LNT promotes the model of indigenous artisans, mostly women, working at home in their own businesses, on

their own terms.

Our business model is ethical, simple, and does not invite inequalities or abuse. The work is dignified and the contractors set their own pace.

This way of doing business helps to lift people out of poverty and creates and supports thriving communities of people doing work they love, with businesses of their own, fulfilling their hopes & dreams.

LNT has deep respect for the Indigenous cultures that inspire and inform many of its fashion products – a respect forged by long and intimate acquaintance - and strongly promotes this heritage in ways that honor the artisans and their skills.

Worker Rights:

Las Niñas Textiles works with small independent contractors who run their own businesses. Most of these are

women-owned family cooperatives. We work only with enterprises that maintain a wholesome environment.

We verify this via periodic personal visits, which can be quite an adventure considering where some of these

villages are located! Many of our relationships are of very long standing, and our contractors know they can

rely on us to be a stable element in their business year after year.

Living Wage and Pre-Financing:

Product prices are agreed between Las Niñas Textiles and our independent contractors, to be fair to both

parties. LNT often provides contractors prefinancing to faciliate obtaining materials and supplies to produce

LNT-designed clothing items.

Gender Equality:

The LNT business model supports women by providing flexible working arrangements. They set their own hours, can incorporate child care with their workday, and can control their own workspace to their own wishes.

No animals are harmed in the production of Las Niñas Textiles products.

Diversity and Inclusion:

LNT empowers traditional artisans – among the most disenfranchised of workers – by supporting their

independent enterprises to create a reliable source of income for themselves in a sustainable way. Most of

these are indigenous women of all ages working from home in extended families or cooperatives. Of course,

some of the artisans are men.

LNT respects and encourages diversity among its customers by offering models in a variety of ages and nationalities, and offering products in a wide range of sizes.

The LNT Supply Chain:

LNT artisans use cotton thread and/or cotton fabric to create our fashion products.

Most these artisans are Indigenous women working in their home villages, where the skills of spinning and

coloring thread for weaving have been passed down for hundreds of years.

Using this handmade thread is a key part of the quality they naturally invest in a time- and labor-intensive product.

Except in the case of upcycled or vintage offerings, our supply chain is usually comprised of Artisans using

Cotton Thread and Textiles, often locally produced, to make unique, quality garments according to LNT’s

designs, which LNT then personally collects and ships to its customers.

[A supply chain is the network of all the individuals, organizations, resources, activities and technology

involved in the creation and sale of a product. A supply chain encompasses everything from the delivery of

source materials from the supplier to the manufacturer through to its eventual delivery to the end user.]
